| Montpellier first appeared on the world stage 1,000 years ago, and became attached to the Kingdom of France in 1349. Now, the capital of Languedoc, Montpellier at once seems to look back and ahead while always taking time to enjoy the here and now. The town center is a labyrinth of narrow medieval streets, carved archways, unexpected fountains and tenderly maintained gardens.
