| In pre-Roman times the whole region was occupied by the tribe known as the Albici/Albiens or even Albiques, which took its name from Alba - the White Country - today known as "Pays d'Albion". This former capital of the Comté, SAULT EN PROVENCE, built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the valley that bears its name, is an ideal point of departure for drives and hikes on Mont Ventoux, in the Nesque Gorges, the Toulourenc Valley, on the Albion Plateau and the Luberon Hills, and other beauty spots near the Drôme Provençale and the Alpes de Haute Provence.
