“BIZE DE LA TOUR” is a “Maison de Maitre” built in a “bourgeois” style in the middle of the XIXth century, the house is situated in the historical part of Remoulins, 3 kilometers (2 miles) from the Pont du Gard, the famous 2000 year old Roman aqueduct. All bedrooms have independent bathrooms and feature all comfort requirements such as phonic and thermal insulation, double glass windows, air conditioning) The house is situated in a protected part of the village, on a square, the architectural unity of which is due to the famous “Gard” stone. Its façade is classified within the French Historical Heritage. The main building is attached to a tower, itself a historic monument « Tour des Escaravats », which was built in the 12th. Century. Within the Middle Ages ramparts, many witnesses from this epoch still remain: mullion windows, ogee arches over windows and doorways, narrow streets, vaults, roman church with a unique bell tower.
Guest room : Louis XIII
Hardly on the threshold of the door, you discover a matrimonial (1.60 m wide or « queen size ») topped by a canopy in the exuberant style of Louis XIII. All in this decor (the tiled fire place, the wooden panels, the pieces of furniture), will invite you to share the good old days; the contiguous spacious bathroom features, for your well being, a twin sink, a shower and a bath.
Guest room CANOPIES
Big and bright, with its 2 single beds (0.90m wide), this bedroom will put you at ease; wherever they come from (family or hunted from antique shops), the pieces of furniture provide the cosy aspect you expect. The bathroom was subject to thorough attention in the wish to have existing elements of decor as outstanding as possible (namely: beamed ceilings, terra cotta tiles, marble fire place incorporating 2 enamelled sinks!).
« GRAND MERE » guestroom
Similar to the « CANOPIES » bedroom in size, elle it is not less charming ; its fabrics represent a set of provençal traditions which we are fond of, with a touch of “esprit 1900”. It will be more than a pleasure for you to take time in the bathroom where a huge Victorian enamelled bath to located…
Only a return to the past enables you to get in to the most private part of the building… From the 19th. Century, you will find steps worn by the time in a 12th. Century original decor. Believe it or not, you are now having your breakfast or your nap over the Ward Room! Little story of the tower: In 1597, REMOULINS was a very little village and yet fortified, thanks to a rampart of good size and height. A visitor reports 100 houses intra-muros. A big tower is nested at one of the angles of this rampart. It is then named the “tour des Scarabasses » (nowadays “tour des Escaravats” or “beetles” tower) for the folowing reason: according to the local inhabitants, every year in the evening of the Saint John the Baptist, the cracks of the tower excrete so many crawling beetles that everything becomes black all around…Then they vanish immediately, in such a way that from the subsequent days onwards, nothing from this sudden event remains. So, people beleive that this species of animal is in fact a kind of diabolic ghost (hence, the “prophylactic” role of the Saint John the Baptist celebration!
