Die Stadt liegt in hügligem Gebiet etwa 10 km von der Mittelmeerküste entfernt am Fluss Lez. Der ursprüngliche Name Monspessulanus leitet sich entweder vom Mont Pelé (nackter Hügel, vegetationsarm) oder dem Mont de la Colline ab. Eine weitere Theorie ist die Namensgebung durch den Monte Pestelario. Die Stadt ist ein Industriezentrum und bekannt für Textilien, Metallverarbeitung, Wein, Druckindustrie und Chemikalien .
